Jenthony Confirms DoS Attack, So Does Facebook, LiveJournal, Twitter

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

This morning, there was a major attack on many social networking sites.Sites included LiveJournal, Facebook, and Twitter. With the attacks, the site has been going a bit slower or inaccessible.

A DoS, Denial of Service, attack is when a user uses multiple machines at once to use up the entire resources of a server of a website that needs to render pages. Of course, social networking sites need to be rendered since it is different for everyone.

And now, Jenthony Media is confirming, for a third time, there was a DoS attack on its web properties. WRAJ Internet Radio was hit with a DoS attack at 6 AM PST. The last attack was in June 2008 when a user requested multiple requests at once to get the current song information. “Vidgle was attacked a short time afterward, in which the podcast feed was being requested every 5 seconds from what seems to be 500 computers,” my friend Maria has noted to me. The podcast feed is able to handle up to 500 computers at one time, but not every five seconds. “And the podcast feed is what uses the most resources on the site’s server.”

In August 2008, WRAJ Internet Radio setup a sleep page when the server believes there is too much resources being. The sleep page requires no rendering and doesn’t use too many resources of the server. Luckily, it was able to activate for the first; some users saw the web page (above) for about 30 minutes saying the site is unavailable. With the latest report from a couple of hours ago, our site speeds and resources are back to normal.

My friend in California who monitors the site closely, Maria, will keep up to date with this development. We were able to get the IP addresses of the attackers and they have been banned from accessing any Jenthony Media website.

The New Facebook Look

Monday, July 21st, 2008

I tried out the new Facebook design look this week and I have to say that its great. The applications menu on the left side is now located on the top so that there is more room on the page. But what I like most is the new profile page for each registered user.

The applications of Facebook is in a separate tab called Boxes, so now loading up someone’s page, it will load faster because there are not many objects on the page.

It is expected that the new design will roll out in late July.

Comparing Friends

I’ve been using the Compare Friends application on Facebook and I found it pretty weird. If you don’t know the Compare Friends application, it basically lets you answer series of random questions and you have to answer by picking a friend out of the two (at random) that relates to the question. Some of the questions are like, “who would you hang out for the day” or too dating questions like “who would rather sleep with?”

Sometimes I just love the two friends it choses at random. My favorite of all so far was a question with my two friends, Amy and Sarah (who are sisters), with “Who would I rather marry?” I’ll let you decide which one I chose.
